So, it is snowing an unbelievable amount of snow once again in the Tri-State area. I don't mind it so much since I don't have to commute to my job! Tons of people, including families, got stuck on highways overnight just north of me. Ding! Light bulb in head lights and memory of Mother telling me to keep my emergency car kit in my trunk even though it took up space and clunked around as I drove fast corners.

This is true though. I would take mine out when ever I could get the chance because it took up space. Now I am rethinking that and wanting to add to it.

So what to have in that valuable car kit that may entertain, feed, warm, and save you or your family if you where stuck on the side of a snow filled highway? I hit the keyboard and came up with a list of must haves that can easily fit in a small flat storage bin in your trunk. For those of you that love Amazon Prime....this list is for you!

Collapsible Emergency Snow Shovel
Snow & Ice Car Scraper
LED Flashlight (the dollar stores also have packs of these for cheap)
Gloves (Waterproof Thermal pair and extra cheapish ones for passengers...you may have to walk eventually)
Jug of H2O
Thermal Emergency Blanket
Emergency Hammer
12 hour glow sticks
Emergency Food Bar
Dried Fruit and nuts that are air sealed
Diaper/wipy supplies for those of you with little ones
A game and book for kids

Some of these things you might be carrying with you all ready but some of these things would not be thought of. I am going to get my kit back together and in my car. I am also going to get a couple of things for the house as well. As much snow as we have been getting I would rather be ready than hungry and thirsty. Happy Winter!

TEMPLE GRANDIN--ANOTHER DOOR

I just got done watching the most extraordinary movie. Claire Danes plays the role of an autistic female growing up and dealing with the lack of knowledge of her disorder in the 1950's-70's. My boyfriends nephew is autistic and was the first person I knew with autism. I knew what autism was but could not totally grasp how an autistic mind viewed the world. This movie did an amazing job at making you relate to their views. On top of that, it gives insight into the cattle industry. Temple was easily fascinated with cattle and the slaughter house process. She came up with revolutionary ways of herding and moving cattle in the ranching process that were very violent and sometimes deadly for the cattle before. She is now a professor and a speaker on the topic of Autism and been published several times.

One thing she was told at one point in her life was to see a situation as a "door opening." This saying was meant to be a metaphor but in her literal mind she would actually see doors that could open when she was about to leap a hurdle in her life. I will always see doors now that "could open" for me every where I go.

This movie aired on HBO and I'm not sure where or when you can view it again but if you get the chance or if it eventually gets to Netflix, which I hope it does, then put it at the top of your list of movies to watch. Amazing, amazing, amazing!

FASHIONS FALLEN DEAR

The fashion world lost one of its most innovative designers this week. I personally have been very fortunate to see the rise of this great design label and have been inspired by Alexander McQueen's designs many times. I can remember the first time I put name to design and fell in love with the amazing visual story and contemporary artfulness that was the Fall 2006 McQueen fashion show in Paris. I personally had never seen such a dramatic performance, as I watched the show on Style.com, to see the pulse pumping music, designs, and hologram silhouette of a watery blue Kate Moss floating mid air. I was truly moved then and many more times as I kept following this great designer!

To McQueen: Your amazing visions of superb talent will be greatly missed. May they continue to inspire and live on in your memory!

Looking through ETSY last night and I found my Muse for the spring! This little girl caught my eye (on the right) while I was looking at what my competition could be in the Kids section of ETSY. I do have to say that this designer is young and fresh and surprising to see on ETSY for Kids clothing. Mad props to Es + Es Kids! Please keep coming out with designs like these. I'm going to try to give ya a run for your money though!

Thinking Chair--Is the Recession Such a Bad Thing?

I want to start a series of posts that are making me think and might make you think too. All of these entries will be titled "Thinking Chair" followed by the thought. Hope that these stir up those brain cells and get you thinking too. I would love to hear any thoughts that you have at the bottom of these posts.

So for my first "Thinking Chair"...it's an awful thing to think with people loosing jobs left and right, but is the recession such a bad thing?

Over the past decade (or more) Americans have been a major drive in consumerism. We buy and buy and toss and toss our goods. In fact if I think back to my lifetime I would say that most of the items that I have bought have broken (and got tossed), have gone out of fashion (and got donated), or are still cluttering my life even though I don't use them. I feel this might be true for many of my fellow Americans. Sellers make items so cheaply, in terms of cost and of course in terms of make, that we don't hold a high value for our things because we can "just go buy another."

For me with the lack of money and more time on my hands I have found myself being more conscious of my buying. In this I mean that I actually am researching my items to make sure that they are well made and going to last me. In this research process I am giving myself time to think about my buying decision. I am not just going out and getting it because "I probably need it." In all, I would say that the Recession has gotten me more humble and in check with conserving, reusing, and spending more time with my loved ones in a more creative way!

I'm aware that things cost money and of my frivolous spending in the past on items and with more time on my hands I have the opportunity to use my brain and come up with creative ways to conserve and reuse and make new. I am also buying better built things and have the intent for these items to be in my life for a very long time. I also am buying things that are a more classic look to my style in the thought that they will not fall out of fashion in my mind in a couple of years. All in all have realized that the Recession has made me a more responsible consumer and has really helped teach me to shop in a way that actually saves me a ton more money in the long run than my previous thought of buy it cause it's cheap.

Hello all! I just wanted to share this really fun and really inspiring New Online Magazine! It's totally free and the layout is really simple and nice! And to boot it's paperless and Eco friendly. Subscribe to it and it's like getting your subscription in the mail box just your electronic mailbox!

This issue features some really great back to school clothing inspiration for kids clothing along with yummy recipes to try and wonderful craft ideas to do for your kids!

This is the first issue and I was impressed so it can only get better from here which is very exciting! Hopefully you'll see some MegsCouture in there sometime soon!

Today I am going through old patterns of my grandmothers! It's great to see all the retro styles and to think that she made these things for her kids. Amongst the patterns was a little girls slip, undies, and petticoat pattern. This is an exciting find!

Petticoats for girls seam to be all the rave right now. I don't know if it's the "Madonna" curve of fashion finally coming around to Girls clothes or if puff and fluff just make anyone feel like a princess (whether your wearing a cone shaped bra or not, wink).

So I am taking it upon myself to try to make one of these oh so popular petticoats for a gift and see what all the rave is about...

DIY Bridal Shower Invites

My sister is getting married in September and being the Maid of Honor (MOH) I decided to make a cute little Wedding Shower invite from some clearance paper I bought at Michael's today.

How to do:

1. I just bought the purple envelopes...(done and done)

2. cut a 12 x 12 cream cardstock sheet into 4 x 6 pieces

3. cut a 12 x 12 piece of see through floral velum into 4 x 6 pieces

4. Stamped all the text on the cream cardstock from these awesome Martha Stewart stamps I bought (I love her)

5. punched two holes at the top

6. fed velvet ribbon through

7. Punched one hole in place setting cards I bought (the white thing) after stamping it

8. threaded the ribbon through all of the pieces and tighed it into a bow

9. and then added a 3D pearl sticker to the bottom center of the place card on the front

10. Obviously don't forget to fill it out with a pretty pen

This concept can be used for any invite or even a card for a friend or loved one. Hope this inspires some of you! ;)

Over the past five years I have been going through school. In this time I have participated in many fashion shows and have created clothing through school projects. IT'S TIME FOR IT TO GO! So I am selling all of it on MegsCouture.ETSY.com in hopes to gain a little bit of extra money to start my own online business of little girls clothing!

The girls clothing line is tentatively coming out in mid March 2009! The items mentioned above are not selling as quickly as I expected and will probably still be up on MegsCouture even after the kids line is out to the public.
